Couple and family-friendly accommodation is only available in our Student Village site.
We have a very limited amount of accommodation specifically for families and couples, which is made available on a first-come, first-served basis. As these properties are available for longer lets - up to three full years, or the entire length of a student’s course - they are not always available at the beginning of each academic year.
There are two fully-furnished compact bungalows in the Student Village, each with two bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen and bathroom. They are close to Talbot Campus and are very close to the nursery.
The rent falls within Local Housing Allowance (LHA) levels for two-bedroom accommodation for those student parents who are eligible and wish to claim LHA/Housing Benefit.
Contact the Residential Services team to check on availability and for further information.
Alternative accommodation option for families and couples
Most BU students with a partner, family and/or dependent search and secure their accommodation in the private sector and you can expect to pay in the region of £1,000 to £1,350 per month for a 2/3 bed property.
You will also need to factor in the cost of bills on top of this with gas & electric approx £140-160 per month, internet approx £20-£50 per month and water & sewage approx £30 per month. If you are a full-time student and you have a spouse who is a foreign national then you could be eligible for an exemption from Council Tax. For more information read Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole council's website.
You can use one of the many online budget calculators to plan your finances.
There are many local private lettings agencies that advertise suitable accommodation year round. BU are unable to recommend any one specific letting agency but you can conduct an internet search to view what is available. To get you started you can use online websites such as: rightmove, Bournecoast, Gumtree or SpareRoom.
When searching for accommodation in the private sector don't forget to look over our useful Homefinders Checklist to ensure you know what to look out for before signing a contract.
If you are student travelling to the UK from another country then you should know that there is very limited suitable and affordable private rental accommodation in Bournemouth for students with families, especially if you have children. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you wait until you have secured your accommodation before you bring your family from abroad to join you in Bournemouth. You can also check out our Bringing your family to the UK webpage for more useful information.
