Bookings, costs and contracts

While you’ll always follow the same process when booking your accommodation with us – regardless of where you choose to live – costs, contracts and codes of practice will differ between our different halls of residence and shared house options. Find out more below.

Booking your accommodation is easy using our online accommodation portal.

For September 2022 entry, if you applied before 30 June, or you’re a postgraduate student applying before Thursday 18 August 2022, within 24 hours of accepting your place at BU, you’ll be able to register for your BU Accommodation Guarantee. You’ll then be notified when it is possible to choose and secure your accommodation.

Everything is done online – including paying your deposit – but you can always get in touch with us if you have any questions or things aren’t clear.

And unlike most universities, we don’t choose and allocate your room for you. Our self-selection system means you choose from what’s available, just like booking a seat in the cinema or for a show.

Costs, payments, and what’s included

The BU portfolio is made up of various different accommodation types, operated and delivered by BU and our accommodation partners.

The accommodation you have booked will dictate who you pay your rent to, how much you need to pay, when you need to pay it and if you will need a Guarantor or not.

Contracts and codes of practice

You’ll find that each of our accommodation partners, as well as each BU-managed accommodation option, will have specific policies, contracts and processes, covering areas such as cancellations and contract flexibility.

All the properties in our portfolio are also signed up to either:

  • The Student Accommodation Code, for accommodation managed by educational establishments (Student Village and Dorchester House)
  • The National Code, for accommodation managed by private operators (all other halls of residence).
