One of the best things about my course was the people I met from around the world. The university supported me with all the tools needed to understand and succeed."
Lilliam Negrette moved from Colombia to Bournemouth in order to complete her Master's and she is now building a new career in Canada.
Lilliam originally graduated as an industrial designer but wanted to gain new study and work experiences abroad.
“After researching a number of universities in the UK, I decided on the MSc International Management at Bournemouth because it felt like home. I was so afraid to start it, especially because it was not going to be in my native language – Spanish – although I was so happy to challenge myself with new things and to be working towards my goals.
“One of the best things about my course was the people I met from around the world. The university supported me with all the tools needed to understand and succeed. It wasn’t easy at all – especially the exams – but I made it.”
Lilliam had originally intended to use her Masters to further develop her own family business in Colombia. However, having returned home, she began to feel frustrated by a lack of opportunities and started to apply for positions overseas.
“I felt I could do more with my Masters by moving and that it would be a good opportunity to boost my professional career. I applied to five jobs in Canada and I was called from all five companies to move forward with interviews. Now I am moving to Canada to start a new life and I know that I could not have done this without the Masters from BU.”
When asked what advice she would give to other students, Lilliam said: “It doesn’t matter what your plans are, life can overturn them and you should be prepared to go for it. I did my Masters thinking that I would continue my own business and suddenly it all changed.
"Having stretched myself academically prepared me to take up new opportunities, become a better person and a better professional.”
