The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, part of the UK Government, raised the national threat level from substantial to severe, meaning an attack in the UK is highly likely. This is in response to the recent attack on members of the Jewish community in Golders Green, as well as an increase in the broader Islamist and Extreme Right Wing terrorist threat from individuals and small groups based in the UK.
In response to the new threat level, we are making some changes on our campuses. While we don’t wish to cause any alarm, it is right that we take the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe across our sites.
What this means for you
From 8pm today, Friday 1 May, you will need your student ID card to access the majority of our buildings at all times, even during the working day. This will include faculty buildings for your seminars and other taught sessions, as well as the Sir Michael Cobham Library at Talbot Campus and the Executive Business Centre’s inner door at Lansdowne Campus. The normal access restrictions to the Bournemouth Gateway Building will remain unchanged.
There will also be an increased security presence around the Fusion building and the Student Centre on Talbot Campus.
If you spot something that feels out of place or unusual for our campuses, please let us know. Trust your instincts. You don’t need to be certain. If it seems odd, it’s worth reporting by speaking to a member of the security team at Poole House, Bournemouth Gateway Building or in our libraries. Alternatively, you can call 01202 962222. Don’t worry if you can’t remember the number - it is printed on the reverse of your student ID card, which is another reason to have it with you at all times.
We can all play a part in keeping our campuses secure and bringing your student ID card to campus is one of the simplest ways you can help. A quick check before you leave home can save you a lot of hassle later. Pop it in your bag, your phone case, your pocket - wherever you’ll remember it - and you’re good to go. If you have lost your card or need a replacement, you can find out how to request a new one on the website.
We wrote to you yesterday with details of all the support here at BU for you, as we recognise that you may, quite understandably, be feeling upset or anxious about the current situation. You can find a range of resources on our website, including how to contact support services, guidance on looking after yourself, and access to specialist help. Our Student Assistance Programme is available 24/7, offers support in over 200 languages, and can provide immediate help if you need someone to talk to. Our Faith & Reflection service is also available to all students, regardless of belief, offering a quiet, safe space and a listening ear.
If you feel your studies or research may be impacted, we encourage you to speak with your programme team or supervisor. For general support and guidance, the AskBU Team is always on hand.
Thank you for helping to keep fellow students, staff and our visitors safe at BU.
Kind regards
Marcin Grabowski
