We’re using a system called JISC Learning Analytics at BU.

Learning Analytics will support you, your Personal Tutor and teaching staff to help improve your learning experience.

What is Learning Analytics?

Learning Analytics combines different types of data regarding student engagement and learning to better understand and improve the student experience. The student platform is referred to as Study Goal and within Study Goal is the attendance capture tool called Checkin.

How will it help me?

Using Learning Analytics data along with other data currently collected from different sources such as Brightspace and your assessments and exam marks/grades we will be able to get a better idea of how your learning is progressing. You can then work with your Personal Tutor and other teaching staff to decide how we can best support you to achieve your goals and reach your full potential here at BU.

What learning activity information is captured?

  1. Physical engagement via Checkin which is a tool used to capture attendance at BU learning sessions
  2. Virtual engagement via Brightspace
  3. Assignment and exam marks/results via SITS, the student records system.

You can find out more about how Bournemouth University processes the personal information of users in JISC Learning Analytics (Data Explorer, Study Goal and Checkin) in the Privacy notice for JISC Learning Analytics Services. You may also find the Learning Analytics Code of Practice useful.

Where can I find more information about how to use the system?

Guidance for attendance capture using the Checkin feature in Study Goal is now available from the Brightspace Help page, under Your attendance. This includes a two-minute video which covers ‘How to check in using Study Goal’ along with details of the equipment you will need - smartphone, tablet or laptop.
