National Digital Archive of Datasets

  • Type of content: online access to archived digital datasets and documents from UK central government departments
  • Level of access: the datasets are delivered as zip files, there are different file types: a .pdf file, multiple .csv files and multiple .html files.

National Library of Scotland: Maps

  • Subject coverage: maps of Great Britain
  • Size/scope: access high-resolution zoomable images of over 86,000 maps of Scotland and England and Wales covering 1560 to 1961. These include zoomable colour images of the Ordnance Survey's six-inch to the mile (1:10,560)and one inch to the mile (1:63360) mapping. The easiest way of finding sheets is through a clickable graphic index using the 'Find by Place' viewer: This allows searching through a gazetteer of placenames, street names, postcodes and Grid References, as well as by zooming in on an area of interest with smaller-scale locational mapping as a backdrop.

  • Level of access: screen prints may be made of these maps for non-commercial, educational and private purposes. Written permission must be obtained in advance to reproduce any digital material from the National Library of Scotland's collections, whether in hard copy or electronic forms.

NHS Knowledge and Library Hub

  • Type of content: wide range of materials including primary research literature, practical implementation tools, guidelines and policy documents
  • Level of access: most content is freely available without the need for username or password, but some requires an NHS Athens account. Students studying on NHS-related programmes are able to obtain an NHS Athens account. Invitations were emailed at the beginning of the academic year.

Nineteenth Century British Library Newspapers

Parts 1 and 2 of the British Library Newspapers collection, spanning 1800-1900, contains regional and local newspapers. The content totals over three million pages and reflects the social and political developments of the time. Coverage includes everything from well-known historic events and cultural icons of the time, to sporting events, arts, and culture. This resource also includes contextual essays regarding the role of newspapers in the Victorian age, bibliographic headnotes, and a chronological overview. Full facsimile and fully searchable.

Nineteenth Century UK Periodicals

Part 1: Women’s, Children’s, Humour, and Leisure. This resource includes full-text of 100 titles and 1.2 million pages from periodicals published in the UK between 1800 and 1900. Its focus is on the birth of modern magazine publishing in the UK. Content included:

  • Women's writing, from Hearth and Home to the suffragist, The Vote via Women and Josephine Butler's The Dawn
  • The rise of children's entertainment and education, with titles including Boys' Own and Little Folks
  • Popular sports and hobbies, from gardening and horse racing to cricket and cycling
  • Satirical and comic titles such as Punch, Fun, Judy and Figaro
  • Newly captured images, including approximately 8,000 in colour.
