The steady growth of the global tourism industry generates a set of positive and negative outcomes. To ensure the long-term sustainability of tourism operations, it is critical to maximise the industry’s positive impacts while concurrently minimizing its negative repercussions. This task is difficult to achieve and require engagement of all stakeholders. Tourism businesses need to understand and embrace sustainability as a means of reducing operational costs, gaining competitive advantage and showcasing their ‘good global citizenship’. Tourism policy makers must design effective sustainability interventions in response to the pressures imposed by the civil society but balancing these out with industry’s demands. Tourists need to change, should they envisage consuming tourism products that are economically-viable, societally-responsible and environment-benign in the future. Lastly, academics should generate evidence and critically evaluate the applicability of the sustainability concept within various tourism contexts.

This theme invites submissions that advance our understanding of the complex inter-linkages between the on-going tourism development and its quest for sustainability. It aims to disseminate knowledge on sustainability-related practices adopted at various stages of the tourism product offer and within its specific sectors. It provides platform for sharing ‘good business practice’ examples and research outcome on sustainability innovations as applied in tourism. The session welcomes submissions related to any aspect of the triple-bottom-line sustainability paradigm as applied to tourism, including (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • (Negative and positive) tourism impacts
  • Tourism impact mitigation and adaptation
  • Tourism impact assessment
  • (pro-environmental) Consumer behaviour in tourism
  • (pro-environmental) Consumer choice architecture
  • Managerial approaches to the mitigation of tourism impacts
  • Corporate Social Responsibility in tourism and hospitality enterprises
  • Policy-making interventions to enhance sustainability of tourism products and services
