We’ve got something for everyone when it comes to playing badminton.

If you’re a talented, highly-skilled player and are successful in trials, you’ll represent BU in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues and trophy competitions. We have both men’s and women’s teams who make up TeamBU Badminton, our community of Performance Sport badminton players.

But it’s not just our Performance Sport student athletes who enjoy playing badminton while they study with us.

Our Campus Sport Badminton Club is one of the most popular here at Talbot Campus. Led by our performance Coach, Martin Wells (below), this is the first step on the development pathway to Bournemouth Universities Performance Teams but is also for those who like a little coaching and competitive matchplay on a weekly basis.

It’s also one of the sports available to all our students and staff on a more casual basis through our Campus Sport Pay & Play sessions; you can pay-as-you-go or it’s one of the sports included in our Campus Social Sport membership.

TeamBU Badminton coach

Martin Wells

TeamBU Badminton is coached by Martin Wells, SportBU Sports Development Manager.

Martin is Level 2 qualified, a former U19 England National and also a coach at Top Racket Badminton Club.

Campus Sport and Courses

If you’re looking to improve your badminton skills through the expertise of a coach, you can sign up to the sport through our Campus Clubs and Campus Courses programmes.

Both are aimed at beginner level but have a few differences; Campus Clubs sessions take place on a weekly basis, there are termly tournaments and, depending on how you get on, you could progress to TeamBU Badminton whereas Campus Courses take place over a more condensed time period (five weeks or nine weeks, depending on which term you choose).

And finally, if you’re looking to pit your skills against fellow students in a league table, you may want to sign up for our Campus Leagues, which run each autumn and spring term every year.

Try your hand at more racket sports

Student playing tennis

Whatever level you’re at, playing tennis is a full body workout. Swinging the racket works the muscles in your shoulders, back and core and you’ll use the muscles of your lower body as you run, jump, crouch and move on the spot.

Female squash player

Whether you’ve never picked up a squash racket before and fancy trying the sport or you’re already a promising squash player, we’ve got two ways to get involved.
